Activities for 1st Graders:
Read, read, read. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that your child is reading TO, WITH, and BY: reading to you, with you, and by themselves for at least 20 total minutes a day
Read recipes and cooking instructions
Play “Simon Says” and games that involve taking turns and following multi-step directions
Read plays and alter voices to represent characters
Keep a journal at home where your child can write about things that happened during the day and/or special trips
Practice writing high frequency words and new vocabulary words- use sand and shaving cream
Make up silly stories and perform plays as a family
Encourage your child to write for a variety of different purposes including making their own books; writing shopping lists; writing letters, notes, or postcards to friends and family; writing simple reports
Look for examples of symmetry in nature
Use flash cards to learn math facts
Play store using household items- use real money and practice counting to $1.00
Make and use a paper plate clock to discuss time
Use measuring tools found around the house
