Activities for 2nd Graders:
Read, read, read. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that your child is reading TO, WITH, and BY: reading to you, with you, and by themselves for at least 20 total minutes a day
When listening to your child read, listen for fluent reading, tone of voice, attention to punctuation, and structural/contextual clues
Read magazines, newspapers, and other appropriate non-fiction text. Discuss article and other current events
Discuss story messages with your child
Play games that involve descriptions and guessing
Keep a journal at home and encourage your child to write for a variety of different purposes including making their own books; writing shopping lists; writing letters, notes, or postcards to friends and family; writing reports
Ensure that your child reads their own writing and makes necessary changes
Discuss authors and the writing process
Solve number problems and ask your child how they arrived at their answer (show their work). Look for more than one strategy
Practice counting using a number line or grid and start at different points
Use flash cards to learn math facts
Practice telling time (analog and digital)
Chart chores and play board games
Use measuring tools found around the house
