Activities for 3rd Graders:
Provide time and a quiet place for silent reading for at least 20 minutes a day
Encourage your child to read books from a series. Discuss personality and character traits of characters
Use resource and reference materials with your child as questions arise. Do a search for information with encyclopedias and the Internet
When listening to your child read, listen for fluent reading, tone of voice, attention to punctuation, and structural/contextual clues
Read magazines, newspapers, and other appropriate non-fiction text. Discuss articles and other current events
Discuss story messages with your child
Write a friendly letter to a pen pal
Persuade your family to do something
Write a paragraph describing your family
Solve number problems and ask your child how they arrived at their answer (show their work) Look for more than one strategy
Use license plate numbers to compare numbers and create equations
Use flash cards to learn math facts
Use a bathroom scale to weight household objects
Plan a family trip using time to five minutes and use of a set amount of money
Play board games
Cook together and discuss fractions in cooking and meal preparation
Grade 3 Supply List
Please have your child bring in the following supplies on the first day of school.
1 Three subject WIDE RULED, SPIRAL BOUND notebook
1 Single subject WIDE RULED, SPIRAL BOUND notebook
2 laminated double horizontal pocket folders (no Trapper Keepers- they cannot fit in the desks)
3 large glue sticks
1 white liquid glue bottle
2 boxes of tissues
1 container of disinfecting wipes
Ample supply of sharpened pencils
Hand sharpener with shavings catcher (not battery operated)
1 box of crayons, colored pencils, and markers
1 soft-sided, zippered pencil pouch (no plastic boxes- they cannot fit in the desks)
2 good sized, durable erasers (not pencil toppers)
1 box of addition flash cards (name on outside of box)
1 box of subtraction flash cards (name on outside of box
* You will be notified around Thanksgiving about purchasing multiplication and division flash cards
Many of the above items will need to be replenished throughout the school year.
When the trimester progress report comes home, ask your child what supplies s/he needs to replenish.
