Activities for 4th Graders:

Provide time and a quiet place for silent reading for at least 20 minutes a day

Have your child record an audiotape or make a video

Read a book with your child and engage in a “book club”

Use resource and reference materials with your child as questions arise.  Do a search for information with encyclopedias and the Internet

Read and summarize magazines, newspapers, and other appropriate non-fiction text.  Discuss articles and other current events

Design an advertisement encouraging others to read a book or purchase a product

Keep a journal at home and encourage your child to write for a variety of different purposes including making their own books; writing shopping lists; writing letters, notes, or postcards to friends and family; writing reports and essays with five paragraphs

Have your child re-write a chapter to an existing story

Write video game instructions for a younger sibling

Compare and contrast books and television

Write letters to family and take telephone messages in cursive

Read car mileage; compare from week to week

Estimate the bill at stores and restaurants (calculate tip)

Measure household items to the quarter inch

Predict the number of heads or tails when flipping a coin.  Record the number of flips

When traveling, discuss elapsed time

Have your child help with reading maps

Invent a game using a spinner or dice

 

 

Grade 4 Supply List

 

Please have your child bring in the following supplies on the first day of school.

 

1        1-1/2 3-ring binder

1        package of wide-ruled filler paper

1    package of ring binder reinforcers

10  binder dividers

2    sturdy file folders

1    soft-sided, zippered pencil pouch (no plastic boxes- they cannot fit in the desks)

1    box of crayons (16-24 count maximum)

1    box of colored pencils

1    pair of child scissors

1    large glue stick

1    white liquid glue bottle

2    highlighters

Ample supply of sharpened pencils (no mechanical pencils please)

1    package of cap or bar erasers

      1  box of tissues (optional)

      1 bottle of Purell (optional)

 

* Students DO NOT need pens, markers, or white-out.

 

Many of the above items will need to be replenished throughout the school year.

 

When the trimester progress report comes home, ask your child what supplies s/he needs to replenish.
