Activities for 5th Grade:
Maintain a reading log of all the books that have been read (at least 20 minutes a day)
Read a book with your child and engage in a “book club”
Use resource and reference materials with your child as questions arise. Do a search for information with encyclopedias and the Internet
Read and summarize magazines, newspapers, and other appropriate non-fiction text. Discuss articles and other current events
Discuss story messages with your child
Read recipes and cooking instructions
Design an advertisement encouraging others to read a book or purchase a product
Keep a journal at home and encourage your child to write for a variety of different purposes; write reports and essays with five paragraphs
Write a play and act it out with family and friends
Write a business letter to a local agency in cursive looking for summer information
Talk fractions when dividing food or preparing a recipe
Use rulers, protractors, and compasses to create maps
When traveling, discuss elapsed time
Take pictures of buildings and look for specific angles and lines
Grade 5 Supply List
**Please make sure that you have read your summer reading assignment for students entering grade 5 using the hand-out that was sent home with your report card.
Please have your child bring in the following supplies on the first day of school.
4 1 inch 3-ring binder
10 two-pocket folders
1 package of loose leaf paper
1 package of ring binder reinforcers
20-25 binder dividers
1 calculator
1 soft-sided, zippered pencil pouch (no plastic boxes- they cannot fit in the desks)
1 box of colored pencils
1 package of markers
1 package of colored post-it notes
1 pair of child scissors
2 different colored highlighters
Ample supply of sharpened pencils (at least two packages- no mechanical pencils please)
2 packages of eraser tops
1 bottle of glass cleaner (optional)
1 box of tissues
1 bottle of Purell
1 container of disinfectant wipes
Please keep a supply of pencils and loose leaf paper at home for homework completion.
Many of the above items will need to be replenished throughout the school year.
When the trimester progress report comes home, ask your child what supplies s/he needs to replenish.
