For students entering Kindergarten, here are some activities that can be done over the summer to promote Kindergarten readiness:
Practice flash card letters and words
Read, read, read. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that your child is reading TO, WITH, and BY: reading to you, with you, and by themselves for at least 20 total minutes a day
Play words games with rhyming and sounds. Magnetic letters can be used to show how sounds and words work. Stretch out words as you say them so that all sounds are identified
Listen to books on tape. Have your child follow along for directionality
Play games in the car, noting road signs and license plate letters; sing songs
Practice writing letters of the alphabet, your child’s full name, and the names of family members
Encourage your child to write for a variety of different purposes including making their own books; writing shopping lists; writing letters, notes, or postcards to friends and family; writing simple reports
Play games or implement chores that involve following multi-step directions
Give your child objects like buttons or crayons to count, sort, and make patterns
Play store using household items- use real money and practice identifying coins
Plan summer activities on a calendar
Cook together and measure ingredients
