What are some of the "School Resource Officer" Duties?
 
ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND DRIVING AWARENESS:  Presentation on the effects of alcohol/drugs, applicable laws and penalties associated with driving under the influence and age specific statutes. Material suitable for Health classes, Drivers Ed.
 
AUTO SAFETY/SECURITY:  Presentation designed to bring an awareness to vehicle operators and/or occupants on auto-related crimes, prevention measures to reduce victimization, and applicable Constitutional issues regarding automobiles.
 
FAMILY/CHILD ADVOCACY:  Helpful in educating teen parents, potential babysitters, and students in general on issues concerning child abuse, neglect, and endangerment, Identifies warnings signs or clues and provides on overview of local resources and their roles.
 
CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUES:  Focus on citizens' basic rights, the role of the police and their authority. Material suitable for History and/or law-related classes.
 
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE:  Statutory requirements and definitions such as "primary aggressor" and "substantative dating relationship" are discussed. A look at how cycles of violence are documented and linked to learned behavior and substance abuse problems. Myths about domestic violence are also addressed.
 
FAMILY SUBSTANCE ABUSE:  Discusses the influences of substance abuse on families, from peer groups, and alternative choices are presented.
 
JUVENILE LAW:  Explanation of offenses related to juveniles, status offenses, and police policies and procedures related to juveniles.
 
OPEN FORUM:  Students prepare questions about current legal issues for the purpose of promoting group discussions.
 
RETAIL THEFT:  Focus on crimes such as shoplifting.

THE TRIAD CONCEPT:  The basic TRIAD concept which signifies the philosophy of the school resource officer program adheres to the following roles:
 
TEACHER: 
 A Member of the faculty and administration
Provide law related education to the students, parents, and staff on request
Role of a quest speaker
COUNSELOR: 
 Informal counseling of students and parents based on the expertise of a law enforcement officer
Work closely with the school's counseling staff
Provide information on community services and the law to students, parents, and staff
Program coordinator
LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER: 
Uniformed
Marked vehicle
Uniformed or plainclothes
Investigates crimes, makes arrests
The officer for the school community
Works with other law enforcement officers and agencies
Liaison between the school and police community
Positive role model
