"Learning to speak another's language means taking one's place in the human community. It means reaching out to others across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Language is far more than a system to be explained. It is our most important link to the world around us. Language is culture in motion. It is people interacting with people."

The World Language Department at Coventry High School is acutely aware of the importance of International communication and business and of the need for knowing a second language. The opportunity for World language study, however, should not be resolved solely for the college bound, but for the career oriented students as well. We believe that all students benefit from the cultural values of world language study. We offer students the opportunity to take French, Italian and Spanish. All students must take a minimum of two years in a language of their choice. In the World language classes throughout the year, the students will facilitate communication by acquiring proficiency in the use of any or all the five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. Foreign guest speakers will also be invited into our language classes to help our students develop an awareness of and positive attitudes and respect toward the heritage of other world cultures. They will also better understand their own language as well as the languages of other cultures and enhance insights into the thought patterns and value orientations of others. In order to get students interested in other languages and cultures, the world language department has a very active club. Please consider joining!
