Tiogue School PTA September 17, 2008 Meeting called to order by Beverly Cloutier 7:05
Bev began the meeting by thanking everyone for their attendance and introduced herself and Karen Landry as co-presidents. Executive Board members in attendance also introduced themselves and stated their respective positions on the board. Secretary’s minutes: From the 6/11/08 meeting were presented by Bev Cloutier and reviewed by membership.
Motion to accept made by Denise Richtarik and seconded by Kristen Bellotti. Treasurer’s Report: Presented by Deb Swanholm · Total funds on hand $14,279.69 · General Fund Balance $7,006.66 · Reserve Fund Balance $6,850.00 · Angel Fund $304.62 · Playground grant $118.41

Principal’s Report: Denise Richtarik · School year off to a great start · New Efforts underway o Science Note booking § Science becoming more important element of NECAP testing § 66% of Tiogue 4th graders meet or exceed expectations o Expanded PVIS (Brave rules) throughout district § This program is a great benefit to schools and students o Tiogue joining Feinstein Schools § Newsletter required and teachers have agreed to help out § Eligible to receive $2,000 in $1,000 increments during the school year. o Updated Math Curriculum § Math always a big Focus at Tiogue School § Math committee formed to align math program with grade level expectations. o Internal Professional Development Committee formed § Teachers identify needs and contributions to help each other
o Technical Grant Committee – John Coen, Chairperson § Applying for $1,000 grant for funds to purchase a presentation cart § John outlined the “Touchdowns for Technology” contest to win 1 computer for every 6 touchdowns scored by the Patriots.
School Committee: Mike Reeves · School Committee working to get school year off to a good start · Monitoring accuracy of class projections, enrollment numbers and transportation logistics. Making adjustments as necessary. One additional teacher needed to be hired at Hopkins Hill. · Coventry has received $50,000 of gambling money from state for the quarter. These funds are set aside for the time being. · Monitoring budget and the school committee remains confident in budget for the year. · Cosmetology program has been expanded at Coventry High School to three years so students can qualify for the certificates necessary to get jobs in the field · An Oaker’s Fund has been established to raise money needed to rebuild the CHS track and Field o Funded with private and corporate donations
Amy Cronin, PTA Council Representative, expressed concerns over new graduation requirements. Asked Mike about SC representation at the state board of regents meetings. Mike believes Ray Spear attends meetings and will check to confirm.
Walk -a –thon: Karen Landry · Scheduled for 9/18/08 and expected to be great success
Open Chair Positions: Bev Cloutier · Many open positions – members encouraged to sign up and should contact any of the executive board members if they would like more information. · Sign up sheet passed at the meeting · Need Co-Chair for Holiday Festival Scheduled for 11/15/08 o Kristen Bellotti working to sign up crafters and needs volunteers to help set up for this event
New Business:
Membership: Kellie Campbell · Membership cards will be coming in the mail and they contain passwords for access to the PTA website · Everyone encouraged to join regardless of level of participation · If you join prior to November you have a chance to win a movie basket.
Open House: Scheduled for 9/25/08 at 7:00 PM. Teachers will be doing a general presentation of the functioning of their classrooms
Reflections: Kristen Bellotti, Chairperson · All students will have opportunity to participate as part of art class · The program is designed to enhance art as a part of children’s lives · Submissions will be made by thanksgiving and be presented for viewing on family night in December
Local Advisory Committee: Mary Gannon addressed the group as a representative of Coventry’s Local Advisory Committee on Special Education. Mary will be present at the 9/25/08 open house and have a table set up with informational material.
Playground: Ginny Lynch · Discussed sources and uses of funds in the playground fund. · Looking for Chairperson for the committee to be responsible for administering the funds for playground repair and improvement.
RIF - Reading is Fundamental: Ginny Lynch · RIF funding has been lost due to economic status of students enrolled at Tiogue · We will still participate in the program utilizing PTA funding · The program is designed to allow the PTA to buy books at reduced prices and distribute them to the students free of charge. The program has been received very positively by students in the past.
Yankee Candle Fundraiser: Ginny Lynch · Begins September 29, 2008 and ends October 14, 2008 · Volunteers needed
Digital Year Book: Ginny Lynch · Digital compilation of candid photos that will be placed on the website. · Ginny will take the photos but she is looking for people to help out with yearbook pages for each grade level (i.e. 5 grades 5 pages). · Kids & parents will be able to download photos from the website
Box Tops: Mike · $1,900 raised last year and the goal for this year is $3,000 · Mike is hoping to use proceeds for new Audio Visual Equipment (LCD TV, Blue Ray Disc Player & TV Stand) · A recommendation was submitted to consider purchasing a “smart board” with the funds. The technology committee will evaluate this proposal.
