All students have a right to learn in a safe and orderly environment. All teachers have the right to teach free of distraction. Our Code of Conduct ensures that Western Coventry School will be a school in which student learning and achievement are the number one priority!
The school rules are:
I will show respect for others, their possessions, and school property.
I will keep my hands, feet, and other objects to myself.
I will use acceptable language.
I will follow directions the first time they are given.
I will not prevent the teacher from teaching or other students from learning.
Students are expected to be in school and on time each day. You must phone the office each day your child is absent. Upon return, a note explaining the absence must be presented to the teacher.
In the News and on the Net...
Occasionally, the media and other members of the school community will ask to take pictures or videos of students. Also, pictures of our students are sometimes included on our homepage. If you prefer that your child not be photographed or videotaped or included on our homepage, please send a note to the office. Thank you.
Support PTA
Our school is most fortunate to have an outstanding PTA unit! Under the leadership and guidance of president Linda Marshall, the Western Coventry School Parent Teacher Association promises to grow even stronger!
The beginning of the school year is vitally important to PTA for a number of reasons. First, PTA conducts its annual membership drive in September. Joining PTA means that you become part of a national organization that constantly lobbies on behalf of children. Secondly, Volunteers of Western Coventry (VOW) seeks parents and other interested adults to enter into a volunteer partnership with our school. Finally, PTA launches its annual (and only) major fundraising activity. Knowing that the beginning of the school year is hectic, PTA thanks you, in advance, for your generous support!
The Camp Westwood YMCA offers before and after school child care at Western Coventry School. To make arrangements for this service, contact the staff at Camp Westwood at 397-7779.
Assignment Pads
All students in grades four, five and six are required to maintain an assignment pad. While we do not mandate any particular pad, assignment pads are available at the school store for $3.00.
Bicycle Safety
Model guidelines for allowing children to use bicycles as transportation to and from school have been developed by the Rhode Island Department of Health. All students are required to wear helmets when riding bikes to and from school. (Rhode Island law requires that everyone fifteen years of age or under must wear a helmet.) Students are to ride on the right side of the road with the traffic and obey all traffic signs and signals. Students should give cars and pedestrians the right of way and should walk across busy intersections. Upon arrival on school property, bicycles are to be locked to the rack located next to the front door. At dismissal, students who ride bikes are to leave school property prior to the departure of buses.
As always, parents are the best judge of whether or not to allow the use of bicycles as the mode of transportation to and from school. Make safety the #1 priority!
Emergency Care Cards
Two yellow Emergency Care Cards must be completed and returned as soon as possible for each student. This information is vital and must be kept current. Please pay particular attention to the following:
Be sure that the individuals designated on the back of the card have access to transportation. They may be contacted in an emergency and they are the only individuals to whom your child will be released during the school day.
Court documentation must be provided annually when student release/visitation is not to be granted to a parent.
All instructions are printed on the attached brochure. Returns are due in the school office by Friday, September 9.
Special Milk Program and National School Lunch Program
The Coventry Public Schools participate in the Special Milk Program for kindergarten students and the National School Lunch Program for students in grades one through six. You are encouraged to apply by completing the appropriate form or by sending your card to the office.
Our dismissal guidelines make the school environment safe for your child. Please familiarize yourself with the following:
At dismissal, students fall into three categories. Children may be bus students (check “yes” on yellow card and indicate the “going home” bus number), walkers (check “no” on yellow card), or YMCA after-school participants (don’t check “yes” or “no”; write YMCA).
Bus students ride the same bus home every day. If you need to pick up a student scheduled to ride the bus, you must report to the office by 3:00 PM to “sign out” your child. Phone calls and notes will not be accepted. You may be asked for identification.
Any emergency deviation from riding a student’s normal bus requires the written request of the parent, consent of the dean of students, approval of the transportation company, and space availability on the vehicle. Daycare exceptions are to be for the entire year. Because of overcrowded buses, students may not change buses to ride home with a friend.
Walkers are those students who walk or are transported by automobile. They are dismissed at 3:05 PM at the school yard gate.
YMCA students are those who have registered for this after-school program. They report to the cafeteria at dismissal. If you need to pick up a student scheduled for the YMCA, you must report to the office by 3:00 PM to “sign out” your child. Phone calls and notes will not be accepted.
There is no parking in the front drive during arrival or dismissal. You should meet walkers on the grassy area in front of the school.
During the school day, your child will be released only to individuals indicated on the Emergency Care Card. We will not release to others.
